The “Shanghai Garden" series is inspired by a trip to Shanghai in May 2019. My principle reason for going was to meet a Chinese artist for some one-to-one lessons in traditional Chinese brush painting techniques, but while I was there I visited two gardens: the famous Humble Administrator's Garden in nearby Suzhou, and the 240-acre Botanical Gardens just to the west of Longhua Temple in Shanghai. Both had an impressive display of "penjing" (known more commonly in the UK as Bonsai) and, as with all aspects of Chinese art, the composition and use of space is strikingly different.
